Morning R&P, Do you have peace do you have love? (#16)?
Hi Everybody.
Well, we’re inside the top 20 on my Top 101 Mix Tape Rules countdown. "Mix tape rules" simply means that I limited myself to one song per band/artist.
Here are the recent selections:
28. Sammy – Encyclopedi-ite
27. the Velvet Underground – Who Loves the Sun
26. Apollo Sunshine – Ghost
25. the Smiths – Handsome Devil
24. John Lennon – Watching The Wheels
23. A.C. Newman – On The Table
22. The Roots – The Seed V. 2.0
21. Wilco – Theologians
20. Grandaddy – Chartsengrafs
19. the Folk Implosion – Natural One
18. the Decemberists – the Tain
17. Stevie Wonder – We Can Work It Out (Beatles Cover)
For number 16 I went with a really nice, folky tune from a local guy who I really enjoy (he is also the bassist for a Franklin For Short who I like a lot). I just think it’s a really nice tune. I won’t lie, he may get the hometown bump here, but I think this is a really great tune. I think he’s got a very nice voice and I enjoy his writing style.
*Note: The last.fm version is recommended as it’s the studio cut and is played, though still broken down folky tune, is played with a band and I think it definitely adds, but if last.fm doesn’t work the youtube performance, which I believe was from a public access tv show is a very good quality and a nice performance. I just prefer the album cut.
Tall Tales and the Silver Lining – Born Down By the Side

So, what did you think? What’s your favorite "side project" or solo band?
Thanks a lot everybody. Hope the week is going great. Half day at work for me which is always nice.
Have a good one.
Thanks a lot Punch. I’m really glad you liked the choice. With the local thing, it’s really just that I like some of the stuff around here that much. I remember opening for Franklin years ago and being incredibly impressed and running out and buying stuff. They’ve just gotten better and better in really big leaps over the years too. It’s also very cool because they’re honestly some of the nicest dudes you’ll ever meet. The Spires also, I just happened to hear some good stuff about from a friend who had seen them and when I grabbed a release I was just really, really impressed. Ventura has some pretty great stuff going on. I’m really lucky to just be right there for it. Pretty cool stuff.
Thanks a lot man. I’m looking at the top of the list and I’m really happy with what’s coming up. (I guess I better be. It is my list and all (insert smile face))
Have a good one Punch.
I also need to have a look at Greenwood’s stuff. I liked Bodysong a lot.
Prof.. my goodness, a curve-ball and surprise
smashing and jolly good of you to spotlight local talent in this fashion and indeed this is storytelling..
thank you, we await the advent of your top 15 with breath baited truly…
BQ: Jonny Greenwood’s solo work

G’day Prof Anger,
Thank you for your question.
Yes to both.
BQ: Record: Layla by Derek & the Dominos
Project: LiveAid and BandAid were side projects for Bob Geldof of the Boomtown Rats. They would qualify as the most significant side project.
Regards

Hey Prof
Very nice, I listened to both songs and enjoyed them. Thanks very much for sharing.
BQ: The Breeders or Them Crooked Vultures

Good evening Prof
I know I’ve missed quite a few of these, but since I’m just sitting here with my sewing {yes, really!}, and you mentioned the word ‘folky’, I thought I’d give it a try…
Playing the lastfm version as I type… and I *really* like this!
So much so that I’m playing it again!
The music makes me think of a variety of Folk / Acoustic guitarists, but his vocals are really calling Paul Simon to mind. In fact, so are the style of the lyrics. Going to try some other tracks…
BQ : I can’t think of any of what people term ‘side projects’, but for solo careers made whilst still a part of a band(s), it would be these :
Stevie Nicks
Karen Matheson
Sandy Denny
